About the Artist:
Red Bluff artist, Jane Birch, cannot remember not having an interest in art. Having lived in the Southwest much of her life, her world was filled with the brilliant colors of the beautiful canyon land. She feels another art influence was that her mother, an accomplished quilt maker, exposed her at an early age to color coordinating and design.
Jane is a graduate of the University of Colorado with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. Her career led her into many areas of nursing, including the last one: school nursing in Plumas County from 1964 to 1988. Though working and being a Mom for her two daughters, Rebecca and Nancy, she painted in any spare time she could and was involved in many art related activities in Plumas County.
In the 1970's her interest was sparked in the use of watercolor when she started taking classes from Pat Kurtz, a well-known artist and art teacher at Lake Almanor. She studied with Pat for several years getting a good foundation in watercolor from these classes.
She has studied with various instructors over the years, some of whom are: Fay Miller, Anne Pierce, the late Richard Yip and recently, Marge Heilman. However, when first moving to Red Bluff in 1990, she considers herself very fortunate to have found art teacher Lee Warner, who was instrumental in getting her to investigate the use of untried mediums and approaches to painting. Some of her latest work has been with the mixture of handmade paper and mixed medium.
While admiring other peoples work and incorporating some of their ideas and techniques into her paintings, Jane continues to search for her own uniqueness and interpretation. She considers painting one of life's many great joys.
