Biographical Sketch:
Born in New York City, Sylvia has lived in Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, Germany,
and California. While living in Japan, she was first attracted to the Fine Arts
in 1964 when a friend introduced her to the ancient art of Japanese
brush painting (Sumie). Studying with experts who taught her the
subtleties of creating brush strokes in limitless shades of black and gray, Sylvia resonated
with this art form in a profound way.
Later, Sylvia studied oil painting, loved it, and painted in this
medium for many years while fulfilling her role as "Super Mom" for
her two active teenagers and preparing herself for a career as
Financial Auditor, and Accounting Administrator for the State of
California.
Upon retiring in 1993, Sylvia and her husband, Andy, moved to Red Bluff where
she began taking art classes from Lee Warner. Lee introduced Sylvia
to many mediums, but the two that have captured her imagination most
are watercolor painting and graphite rendering. Examples of both mediums
are shown here.
Sylvia has continued to expand her skills by attending classes and workshops,
and she has received recognition for her work in both watercolor and graphite,
winning multiple awards for her still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and birds at the
Tehama County Fair in 2002, 2003, and 2005. Most recently, she has been studying
with Mary Anne Beaulac; she has also studied with Susan Schimke, Anne Pierce,
and Salvatore Casa.
Sylvia's intent is to invite you into her artwork to see and share the joy
she finds in living each day.
